Women’s History Month 2019: Hometown Heroes

There is no better way to celebrate Women’s History Month 2019 than to shine the spotlight on some of our fantastic clients. The women on this year’s list is by no means complete and we look forward to featuring more hometown heroes who are blazing trails and paving the way to make the world and our community better for all.

Join us in celebrating their contributions.

Judge Sheree Davis Cunningham

The Honorable Sheree Davis Cunningham is a judge in The 15th Judicial District of Florida (Palm Beach County). She was appointed by Governor Lawton Chiles in 1993 and was most recently re-elected to a new six-year term in 2016.

Cunningham received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and her J.D. degree from the Howard University School of Law. She worked as an assistant state attorney in the 15th Judicial Circuit from 1985 until she was appointed to the county court in 1993.

A 2012 HERLIFE Magazine cover story chronicles Judge Cunningham’s road to the bench. Here is an excerpt.

A steel gavel and a heart of gold are two reasons why Judge Sheree Davis Cunningham is making a world of difference in the South Florida judicial system. Since her appointment by Governor Lawton Chiles almost two decades ago, she has been faithfully servicing the public. Her appointment to the bench marked the first time in Palm Beach County history that an African-American woman has served as a judge. Since then, she has been recognized as one of Florida’s 25 Most Influential and Prominent Black Women, received the Heritage Leadership Award for Outstanding Community Service, and was the recipient for Extraordinary Commitment to Fairness in the Criminal Justice System for 2010.

Judge Cunningham shares with HLM about family, her faith and the road to the bench. But for Judge Sheree Davis-Cunningham, it’s more than just holding court and setting wrongs aright. It’s reaching beyond the bench and into the hearts of the community to make a difference. “I enjoy and care about people and work hard to be committed and patient as I perform my labor of love.”

Her ‘labor of love’ is serving the community of Palm Beach County. Her commitment to life, to her family and to God is what makes her a woman of difference.
